Lawrence Kinney, permanently installed on the Grounds of Buffalo State College

Lawrence Kinney was one of  nine artists selected to participate in the "Art Across Borders"  exhibit of the Women's Pavilion 2001 Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, N.Y. His sculpture, "Mary G. Ross, Scientist, Engineer, Native American" developed after extensive research into the life of Mary Ross, the first Native American female engineer.

Prior to developing the sculpture, Kinney and his wife (artist-writer Mary Ouimette-Kinney) spoke extensively with Ross about her accomplishments. Mary authored several articles about Ross and the sculpture, which has been permanently installed on the grounds of Buffalo State College.

The sculpture, which stands at 8 ft. x 13 ft. x 9ft., is constructed out of steam-bent white oak wood.  A vinyl image of Mary Ross plus words describing her work were attached to the sculpture during the exposition.

Kinney's sculpture has been referenced in biographies about Mary Ross' life.
