Edges Competition
Artpark President George Osborne presents Lawrence
Kinney with the grand prize
award for the “Edges ’08” sculpture competition and
exhibition.
Lawrence Kinney took home the
grand prize at the Artpark
"2008 Edges Sculpture Competition and Exhibit"
held at Artpark in Lewiston, NY, in 2008. The
exhibit featured eight of thirty three sculptures
submitted for selection by juror Robert L. Wood,
professor of design and head of the Ceramics
Department at Buffalo State College.
Artpark president George Osborne
presented Kinney with the $2500. grand prize prior to
a concert by Poison, one of several free concerts
that were featured as part of Artpark's Tuesdays in
the Park.
Kinney's winning sculpture,
"Spalted Device" was created as part of a body of
work that incorporates a principal of
"psuedo-functionality". In an interview with The
Buffalo News following the concert, Kinney
stated,
"The work is a combination of hardwoods and
150-year-old timbers, and part of my idea is to make
it look like it has some kind of functionaliy, but
it's psuedo-funtion". -The Buffalo
News
Kinney also said the sculpture is not functional
despite looking like a tool. The sculpture can also
be taken apart and put together in other ways.
